I've made note of the upheval at Robert Yates Racing over the last few weeks, but it appears that the pieces are falling into place in a rapid fashion. Two articles:
Mayfield fired from Evernham Motorsports
Something seems a tad fishy to me with this story. Evernham is upset that the team has dropped out of the top 35 in points, and therefore the team has to race it's way in on time. (Imagine, having to race your way into a race. Who's bright idea was that?) He says the team is capable of more than what they are producing. Of course they are. They were in the Chase last year. Since the team has dropped from the top 35 in points, he cans the driver and is quoted in the article as saying he needs a "25-year-old Bill Elliott". I like your thinking, Ray, but you're flogging a dead horse. The age of the Driver/Mechanic has long passed. Good luck with that search. The comment leaves a lot of room for the imagination, which leads me to the second article:
Gilliland could be in the 38 as early as next week
So, is Elliot Sadler the "[31]-year-old Bill Elliott" that Evernham is looking for? If you've read my posts on the incidents at Yates Racing, or read the articles at Nascar.com, you'll remember that it was rumored that Evernham has contacted Sadler about possibly taking over driving duties for the 19 team. Robert says that he hasn't discussed anything with Evernham, at least not yet. The article paints a picture of RYR going to Gilliland and telling him the ride is his if and when he wants it. Just say the word. So where does that leave Sadler?
It's going to be an interesting story to watch over the next couple of weeks. Yates has pretty much forced Evernham's hand by making the Gilliland announcement. Time for Ray to put up or shut up. (Meanwhile, Sadler is stuck in the middle, as is Mayfield.) Does anybody remember Musical Chairs starting this early?
