...by switching manufacturers.
How is this news?
He'll have cars "shaped" like a ford with pretty little ford logos taped on the nose when he rolls into Daytona next year. Big deal. He sucks in Chevys, he'll suck just as hard in a Ford.
This story is almost as good (read: ridiculous) as the one concerning Martin and MB2 motorsports. There are rumors flying around that MB2 motorsports will be switching from Chevy to Ford next year when Martin moves in becasue of his "longstanding relationship with Ford racing". That's crap.
Sure, it has happened before... (Penske moving from Ford to Dodge, Gibbs moving from Pontiac to Chevy) but to say you're going to do it because of a signed driver just seems retarded. I'm sure if you paid him enough, he'd drive a Hearse. Drivers want to race. Martin went to MB2 because they offered him the kind of deal Roush wasn't willing to sign for. (And that, to me, is very sad. Someone has forgotten their roots, and it ain't Mark Martin.)
But, I've wandered a bit.
So, why exactly is this news?
Michael Waltrip stealing Dale Jarrett away from RYR is news. Mayfield getting canned mid-season is news. Evernham stealing Sadler, and thus leaving Yates without any veteran talent, is news. Roush being unwilling to re-sign Martin for a partial schedule, after their storied history together, is news.
I, for one, could care less what they're driving, because they're not driving Fords, or Chevys, or Dodges, or Toyotas. They're driving STOCK CARS, with pretty little logos slapped on the nose. They're all the same on the inside. I don't think I'm alone in this sentiment, either, and I'll prove it. With two questions.
Who (no searching, now) won the Cup last year, and how many times has he won it?
Got it? Cool. Next question.
Who (again, no searching...) won the manufacturers cup last year, and how many times have they won it?
(chirp, chirp... chirp, chirp.)
You see, it's not about the cars... it's about the drivers. The only people that care about which driver is in what car are the big boys in detroit. Why? Because they think it will sell cars. (And I'm sure the Ford boys are absolutely salivating over the marketability of having Robby Gordon on board.) I've never once watched a race on Sunday and thought "y'know, Kevin Harvick drives a Monte Carlo... I need to get one, too." No, I tune in every week (religiously) to see Kevin do well, not to see Kevin and his Chevrolet do well. Again, I could care less what he's driving. Put him on a tractor, I'll be there. I'd be a little disappointed he couldn't keep up, but I'd root for him nonetheless.
So, to sum up, a few words for Nascar and Detroit:
Guys, we don't care what they're driving, so long as they're driving.
