Well, sort of.
Sunoco tells Shell to Get Bent!
Apparently the folks at Sunoco, which is the "Official Fuel ofMoney Nascar" and has their logo on every car, track, fuel canister, etc., was displeased with the fact that Harvick's uniform... no, that's not a typo... is dominated by the Shell logo, which got a good deal of camera time by winning the Busch and Nextel events. So much so that they want it changed.
Well, lets think about something. Sunoco images and advertising are visible at every track, every week, win lose or draw. For Shell to get that kind of exposure, Harvick would have to win every pole and every race, every week. In doing so, Sunoco will still get coverage both on his car and in his pit stall.
In other words... Sunoco? STFU. You don't have an argument here.
If that isn't silly enough, the article goes on to explain that Sprint, now partnered with Nextel, is upset over the Cingular/AT&T merger as it relates to sponsorship.
When Nextel was announced as the series sponsor a few years ago, there were concerns over existing series sponsorship with competing providers, namely Alltell (Newman) and Cingular (Burton). The companies came to an agreement that they could continue to sponsor cars and market their image as they saw fit, and Nextel wouldn't raise any concerns.
The Nextel/Sprint merger took place a full year after Nextel took over series sponsorship. After doing so, they began referring to their services as "Sprint/Nextel" services. Thereby "riding Nextel's coat-tails", if you will, into the Nascar marketing machine.
Sprint's biggest complaint with AT&T? Cingular services are now being referred to as "Cingular/AT&T", with both logos featured prominently in advertising, there by... wait for it... "riding the coat-tails of Cingular" into the (yada-yada).
So Sprint, you can STFU too.
Three drivers can't possibly win every pole and race every week and get the kind of exposure Sunoco and Sprint/Nextel get every day of every week. If you're upset that you're spending more money than your competitors are, then drop your series sponsorship and pick up a car.
I'm sure there are companies that will be more than happy to take your place, complaint free.
