There's a lot of interesting remarks in that article...
That's possibly the most polite "STFU" I've ever seen.
But, he does raise an interesting point.
Anyone remember the Robby Gordon debris incident last year, and how much people talked about that? It has happened for years, and Nascar turned a blind eye to it, because they didn't mind - and for that matter, probably wanted - it happening. After all, we know drivers have done it before... some have admitted doing it, and some have admitted turning someone around to draw a caution. Nascar never did anything about it, because it kept the racing close and prevented the leaders from lapping 80% of the field.
All of a sudden, someone gets caught doing it on camera, and everyone becomes outraged! He's altering the outcome of the event! So with the public outcry comes a slap of the wrist and Nascar is now forced to take things into their own hands. They can't let drivers do it anymore, so now they're forced to create their own debris cautions. Funny how the camera crews never can seem to find it, though. Once upon a time, during a caution for debris, you'd be able to see a cleanup truck move out to the racing surface and pick up the offending object. When was the last time you saw that? (I'm not talking just any caution... I'm talking about the ones where no cars have spun, made contact, blown a motor, etc.)
You don't see it anymore because they're not out there anymore. Sure, the trucks roll out there and look for it, but can never find it because they don't know what they're looking for, and the reason for that is that the debris doesn't exist.
Am I outraged or in any way upset by this? No. Yes, it affects the outcome of the race, but I reiterate... it has happened for years, although it has recently (in the last 10 years or so) become more prevalent. We have a $4 billion media contract to thank for that.
No, what really upsets me is when it seems to repeatedly (without naming any names) benefit the same drivers, because then it starts to really look like "wrestling". Time and time again I've caught myself saying, "Christ, how lucky can this guy get?". (no, I'm not talking about Gordon last week. That was a legit caution, and a damn lucky call by his chief. No question in my mind, he earned that one.)
I'm a Harvick fan, and love to see him do well. As excited as I should be that he won the Daytona 500 this year, I'm not. Why?
Nascar blew the call at the end of the race. They keep banging the drum about putting safety first - and even mention it in the article posted above - yet on the last turn of the last lap with 41 of the 43 cars pouring into a massive pileup, they failed to throw the caution. If safety had been thier #1 concern, they would have thrown the caution as soon as Busch got sideways and locked the field on timing data. I say that because they've done it before, and will no doubt do it again. For that reason, that win will carry the Maris Asteriskā¢ in my eyes.
I'd be surprised if Nascar punishes Tony for his remarks. They've always been open and receptive to criticism from drivers, and I think it's a beautiful thing. How many other sports can you name that are the same way when it comes to officiating? But, again, Tony does have a valid point. Sure, it has happened before, and will happen again, but it seems to be happening a bit too much.

Jayski posted this comparison:
...but I don't think it put Stewart's comments to bed, because it seems to me like there are far more "strategically placed" debris cautions near the end of the race. I'd like to see Jayski's data broken down further to show timing of the debris cautions thrown.

now come on hardman. When someone makes a remark about gordon you cry. I think it was you that ejected 3 of us for making a few easy going jokes about gordon on the server. I'm a Mikey fan and if anyone needs to have a thicker skin these days it's Mikey fans. IMHO its a bunch of bs about nothing and makes for good tv and pr. Tony is a cry baby and anytime something doesn't go his way, he first blames someone else...can you imagine him racing on Dega Pro? Nascar officials have to make high pressure decision in the heat of competition with only a short time to make them and millions watching. I do believe that nascar is trying to make some changes to the sport since dale died and after Jarret had that incident where he was sideways during a yellow with people racing for position. The Daytona this year...I think they blew it and should have been consistent and locked the field, but they felt that the situation was ok to race to the checker. I disagree. Gordon is a great driver...no doubt and has a huge fan base. E jr has a huge fan base. Great rivalry for the sport. Problem is people feel so much loyalty it gets in the way of making reasonable judgement when it comes to other drivers. Happens in every sport. Just look at the stands in any college or pro football game or basketball game. The beer can chucking at gordon was a few fans who under the influence were poor sports. I've seen it at Red Sox games and at Florida Gator FB games when they lost. The debris cautions...get over it. I'd rather they err on the side of keeping drivers alive. last thing...my wife really does like gordon and jimmy, but look who she married...obviously doesn't have any good sense or taste wow, that was way longer than i expected

What gets me is when people let stupid words bother them way to much, people need to relax and enjoy life because it's to dam short not to PS: One other thing and I'm "NOT" taking sides on this issues but we all need to remember this, Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech "or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances Theres way to much hate in this world as it is so lets not be a contributer to it, lets all just get along and remember there only words they can't hurt you Peace
