When I first read this, I was thinking it was something serious, as though they had done some major parts-swapping similar to the DEI camp earlier this year. The Hendricks engineers are quoted at nascar.com as saying that they were merely playing with the space between temlpates to see what could be re-shaped and still fit the templates, and screwed it up.
I don't have a problem with them doing it, nor do I disagree with the penalty. I think this is the first time in a long time that I can say the penalty fit the crime.
This is something teams have been doing for decades, ever since aerodynamics became as important as they are today.
The penalty was effective on two fronts. One, the teams now know that regardless of how minor the infraction is, if the car doesn't meet specs, it will not hit the track. Two, since the cars never turned a lap in their current configuration, no one on pit road knows how much of an advantage they would have gained, if at all. That could keep others from trying the same thing. These guys can afford to miss practice because of the extensive testing they put into the COT. Other teams facing the same penalty would really be behind the 8 ball right now, which compounds the issue about whether it would be worth it.
Finally, I can honestly say Nascar made a smart call. I may be alone in that statement, but you know what people say about opinions...

Not that Gordon cares really... Right, that's my point. They're so confident about the quality of their COT production, they're just shrugging it off. They can afford the penalty, and it was worth the effort to see if they could get away with it to widen the performance gap, and try to stay one step ahead. Now they and everybody else knows that they can't circumvent the rules in the slightest manner with the COT. They'll have to be better racers, mechanics, and engineers rather than tweaking the rule book to find another tenth.
